Bandwidth questions

We have many remote sites/networks. We are running a variety of Scope Actions to update various software products, like Adobe Flash Player, Adobe Reader, etc. with their latest version updates.

The way we have things setup is a tech is running the Goverlan Scope Action on their computer and they are located in Town A.

The remote site is Town B and is connected via a Wide Area Network. We have a server at the remote site and we have copied the Flash Player updates, etc. to this server into a network share available to everyone. Thus, the update files are located in the same internal network as the target workstations.

We create a Scope Action to install the Flash Player update to the target computers in Town B and use the server in Town B to install the file from. We have the Scope Action setup to "Run install package from source path".

Our objective is to minimize the bandwidth needed between my Goverlan computer in Town A to the target comptuers in Town B, because many of our remote sites have very limited bandwidth. So our logic was to put the source install files out into the same network as the target computer and have the Scope Action execute them from there, which should eliminate bandwidth concerns when installing the updates. (i.e. - We are not running the updates from a server in Town A, which would force the updates to be installed 'across' the Wide Area Network to that remote site. We want all that to be handled "internally" at the remote site, thus eliminating as much communcation across the WAN as possible.)

So after that long explanation, my question is why are we seeing these network lines getting maxed out when running these Scope Actions if the software being installed is located out at the remote site itself? Some of the updates are large, but if everything is internal at the remote site, that shouldn't matter, should it? But more importantly, what, if anything, can we do to help reduce the bandwidth in these scenarios? Is our logic flawed on how we are performing this task?

I know that Goverlan has to monitor the status of the Scope Action on each target computer while it is running, so is it possible that this is part of the issue? What is Goverlan doing while a Scope Action is running to monitor things?

I looked at the "Optimize Goverlan for slow connection" setting, but the explanation in the Help Manual simply states it "...some features behave differently to limit network bandwidth usage". We did not currently have this option set and will look at doing this, but is there more information on this option on what it does so we can decide if there's an adverse effect on the Scope Actions we are running to install these updates?

Thank you.

Forum: Goverlan Scope Actions v7

Good Morning,

Our goverlan version 7.01.51.0605 randomly when a user is searched it will not find anyone however if you go to that computer directly and checked the logged in user option the user shows as being logged in.

Also when you search for a specific user and then set focus it takes you to a completely different machine that the user has never used before.

These problems seem to start occurring as we started upgrading to Windows 7 32bit. Windows XP machines do not seem to be giving us any issues only the windows 7 any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Forum: Goverlan Administration & Diagnostics v7

Software version 'condition' check

I've been using conditions awhile now, but I had one of our techs ask me something that made me wonder myself.

Example: I have Adobe Acrobat 8.1.0 installed.

We want to run an Action to install all the individual Acrobat patches, which would update Acrobat to v8.3.1.

Of course we don't want to waste time running the Action on computers that don't have the Acrobat 8 software installed, but also if they do have it installed, then there's no need to run the Action to patch them if they already are at v8.3.1.

So we set two conditions:

- Software.Products-Product Name CONTAINS Acrobat 8
- Software.Products-Product Version NOT= 8.3.1

But the question someone asked me is what if a computer had Acrobat 8.1.0 installed and they had a completely different product installed that was v8.3.1. (For example, let's say QuickTime was installed and it happened to be v8.3.1)

Would our condition be met and the updates get installed?

Basically I'm asking how does the 'Product Version' condition know what product to check the version of? Does it check the version of 'any' product installed, such as if you had QuickTime 8.3.1 installed? If so, is there a way to only check the version for Acrobat 8?

I had always assumed if I specified a 'Product.Name' condition, then the 'Product.Version' condition would always check that product. But thinking about it, you can add a Product.Version check without specifying a Product.Name condition, so that got us wondering what product(s) is the Product.Version condition checking!

Forum: Goverlan Scope Actions v7

Was inquiring about the results of a scope action preformed earlier today. When looking at a PC's device manager > Monitors, about half of them return more than 1 entry (when there is only 1 monitor hooked up to it) and mostly return 'Plug and Play Monitor'.

For instance:
PC100
-Device Manager
--Monitors
---Plug and Play Monitor
---Plug and Play Monitor
---Plug and Play Monitor

Also, when doing a scope action on the monitor type (we searched by 'is digital' and 'screen resolution'), known CRT monitors were showing up as digital.

Any insight to this would be greatly appreciated

****EDIT****

Upon further review, the reason for the plug and play showing up multiple times is because of the chipset on the driver for the intel 900 series (so it can run 3D, 2D, etc... in parallel)

Forum: Goverlan Scope Actions v7
